Light Coaching

Background

I used to teach workshops and offer one-on-one landscape photography sessions. As much as I enjoyed sharing what I'd learned from my time in the field, I never felt quite comfortable with being paid for simply sharing information. To boot, the more I learned about landscape photography, the less I felt I understood. This is exactly where I wanted to be as an artist, but not as a teacher. So I stopped. The only formal instruction I do now is with 3rd-5th grade classrooms in the Missoula County Public School systems via a SPARK Arts residency every spring. Sharing the rudiments of seeing the landscape to non-paying kids is where my heart is at.

Which brings me to the purpose of this page: to share whatever it is I've learned over the years and am currently exploring in the world of photography, light and landscape. I'll add to this page from time-to-time when a new concept has taken shape. Otherwise, this is it.

Learn your camera

Learn your camera inside and out. It is simply a tool for capturing light: you are the creative entity, it is just a box. Learn it so well that you can operate it in the dark, your fingers effortlessly flitting between its buttons and dials. Practice in your house, your yard, a park, the street, wherever you are. The ultimate goal here is to become so proficient with the operation of the camera that you can quickly respond to changing light and various compositions.

Use whatever camera you have access to.

Develop a process

Fall in love with process, not outcome.
